Lakewood, NJ – Wrong-Way Crash on Rte 70 Injures Two
Lakewood, NJ (March 7, 2024) – Two drivers were seriously injured early Friday morning, March 7, when a wrong-way driver caused a multi-vehicle crash in Lakewood.
Authorities say the crash happened around 5:50 a.m. on Route 70 near Airport Road. Investigators determined that a Cadillac CT5 Blackwing was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound in the eastbound lanes of Route 70. The Cadillac collided head-on with a Mazda CX5 before crashing into several other vehicles.
The Cadillac caught fire after coming to a stop, trapping the driver inside. Emergency crews arrived quickly and managed to pull the driver from the burning vehicle. He was initially transported to a nearby hospital and later transferred to a burn center in New York City. His current condition has not been disclosed.
The Mazda driver suffered critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the occupants of the other vehicles involved were not injured. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Our thoughts are with the two injured drivers, and we hope for their full recovery.
Car Accidents in New Jersey
New Jersey sees a significant number of serious car accidents every year, many of which involve reckless driving or wrong-way crashes. These incidents can be particularly dangerous, often leading to severe injuries or fatalities.
Understanding how high-speed collisions impact roadway safety can provide important insights into accident prevention. Here are a few critical factors that contribute to serious crashes:
- Wrong-Way Driving – Entering the wrong lane of travel can have catastrophic consequences. These crashes often happen due to driver impairment, distraction, or poor road signage.
- High-Speed Collisions – Speeding increases the force of impact in a crash, making it more difficult to avoid other vehicles and worsening injuries. Many severe accidents involve excessive speeds.
- Multi-Vehicle Pileups – When a crash involves multiple cars, the risk of secondary collisions rises. Vehicles following too closely or driving at high speeds may not be able to stop in time to avoid further impacts.
- Vehicle Fires – High-speed crashes can lead to fuel leaks and fires, creating life-threatening situations for drivers and passengers. Prompt emergency response is crucial in these cases.
- Critical Injuries – Accidents at high speeds often result in severe injuries such as burns, fractures, internal trauma, and head injuries. Victims may require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.
