Pedestrian Injuries in New Jersey

Manalapan, NJ - Elderly Man Hospitalized After Pedestrian Accident on Arbach Ln

New Jersey legislators have spent years working to make pedestrian safety a priority.  The Division of Highway Traffic Safety reported that New Jersey has the highest incidence of pedestrian accidents in the nation. Senior citizens, very young children, and people who do not speak English have the highest chance of being killed or injured in a pedestrian accident.

In New Jersey, failing to stop for a pedestrian inside a marked crosswalk is an expensive mistake. Violators could be penalized with a fine of $200, two points on their driver’s license, and as many as 15 days of community service.

Furthermore, pedestrians crossing a street inside an unmarked crosswalk have the right of way over all vehicles unless traffic is being regulated by a stoplight or police officer, or unless the pedestrian has another way to get across, like an overhead path or a tunnel.
