How Medical Bills Are Paid After a Car Accident in New Jersey
After a car accident in New Jersey, medical bills are primarily paid through your own auto insurance policy under the state’s no-fault system, regardless of who caused the crash. Knowing how this process works can help injured people plan ahead and avoid unexpected gaps in coverage.
New Jersey requires drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection, commonly known as PIP. PIP coverage pays for medical expenses after a crash, up to the limits outlined in your policy. These limits vary depending on the plan you selected when purchasing your insurance. People involved in collisions should review their policy details as soon as possible to understand what their coverage includes.
PIP coverage handles many common medical costs, including emergency room visits, hospital stays, follow-up appointments, and physical therapy. However, some treatments or long-term care needs may exceed your policy limits. When that happens, injured people may need to explore additional options to cover remaining expenses. Keeping detailed records of every medical visit, prescription, and related cost helps ensure nothing gets overlooked during the claims process.
In cases where injuries are serious, New Jersey law may allow an injured person to step outside the no-fault system and pursue a claim directly against the at-fault driver. This option depends on the type of policy you hold and the severity of your injuries. Serious injuries — such as broken bones, permanent limitations, or significant scarring — often meet the threshold required to pursue additional compensation beyond PIP benefits. An attorney can review your policy and injuries to help determine whether this option applies to your situation.
Many people also face challenges communicating with insurance companies after a crash. Insurers may question the necessity of certain treatments or dispute the connection between the accident and your injuries. A car accident lawyer can help manage that communication, review medical documentation, and explain what compensation may be available to you based on the specific details of your case.
