Toms River, NJ – Child Critically Injured in Multi-Car Crash on Rt 70 near Massachusetts Ave
Toms River, NJ (March 24, 2023) – A child is in the hospital in critical condition after a car crash happened on Friday, March 24 in Toms River. The wreck was reported to authorities in the area at around 4:00 p.m.
According to information from local officials, the crash occurred on Route 70 near Massachusetts Avenue. A man from Jackson Township reportedly ran a red light while driving a rental pickup truck and struck another vehicle occupied by four people.
Sources say the incident occurred when the man, identified as Charles J. Sharkey, 33, was headed east on Route 70 in a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 when he failed to stop at a red light at Massachusetts Avenue. He then grazed the back of a 2016 Honda CRV that was turning left onto Massachusetts Avenue from Route 70 west.
He then struck a 2017 Subaru Impreza carrying one adult and three children. The Impreza was also attempting to turn left onto Massachusetts Avenue from Route 70 west, reports reveal. The force of the collision caused the Impreza to spin backward while the pickup truck overturned and caught fire.
As the pickup turned over, it grazed a 2021 Lexus RX 350. The man driving the Impreza along with the three children suffered injuries, police said. All four were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where the man and two of the kids were treated and released. The third child was seriously hurt and remains in critical condition in the hospital.
The collision closed the intersection of Route 70 and Massachusetts Avenue while responders worked in the area. Traffic was tied up on nearby roadways as a result while drivers attempted to go around the crash scene.
Police believe driver negligence played a part in causing the accident. Investigators continue to work on determining the reason the collision occurred.
We hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.
