New Jersey Bus Collisions
From 2005 to 2006, commercial buses comprised about 5% of all large vehicle crashes in the United States. In 2005, around 14% of all collisions in New Jersey involving large vehicles involved buses. A study conducted during that same year concluded that 40 buses were involved in 39 accidents that resulted in serious injuries and fatalities for those involved.
Research shows that approximately 50% of those accidents happened either partially or totally due to the negligent actions of bus drivers. Bus accidents often happen under the following circumstances:
- Drivers operate their vehicles while distracted
- Drivers fail to remain on the roadway during lane changes
- Drivers operate their vehicles with defective brakes
- Drivers engage in dangerous tailgating
- Drivers travel at unsafe speeds
- Drivers make Illegal lane changes or turns
Public carriers such as bus drivers and their bus companies are legally and professionally bound to a specific duty of care to maintain their buses in safe and proper working order, and to also operate their buses safely and responsibly. When this duty of care is breached, by either the driver or their employer, everyone involved is at risk of sustaining serious or even fatal injuries.
Following a serious bus accident, those who suffer injuries may find themselves stuck in the hospital for a long time where they must undergo medical care that is expensive, exhausting, and sometimes invasive. Being injured in a traffic accident is never easy, and can cost victims a lot of time, energy, and money. Both economic and noneconomic consequences can arise from being injured in a serious bus accident.
