Edison Twp., NJ – 31-Year-Old Man Killed, 3 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on NJ Tpk

February 24, 2026

Edison Township, NJ (February 24, 2026) – A 31-year-old Perth Amboy man died in a multi-vehicle crash on Sunday, February 22, on the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison Township. New Jersey State police responded to the southbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike around 4 a.m.

Troopers arrived to find several damaged vehicles along the right shoulder of the highway. Investigators said a BMW SUV, driven by Alan B. Cahuanasayhua, struck the rear of a parked Chevrolet pickup truck. The pickup truck had stopped on the right shoulder at the time of the accident.

Police reported that a Lexus SUV then crashed into the BMW from behind. Moments later, a Mazda SUV also hit the BMW. During the chain-reaction collision, the BMW and Lexus struck a concrete barrier.

The impact threw Cahuanasayhua from the BMW. Emergency crews rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead from his injuries.

The drivers of the Chevrolet pickup, Lexus SUV, and Mazda SUV suffered minor injuries. Paramedics evaluated them at the scene and transported them to a hospital for further treatment.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the crash. Officials continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victim and wish a full recovery to those injured.

How Insurance Claims Work After a Crash in New Jersey 31-Year-Old Man Killed, 3 Injured in Multi-Vehicle Crash on NJ Tpk

After a crash in New Jersey, insurance claims usually begin with each driver reporting the accident to their own insurance company, even if another vehicle caused the collision. New Jersey follows a no-fault insurance system, which means drivers typically turn to their own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage first for medical expenses.

This system applies to many injury accidents, including multi-vehicle crashes on major highways like the NJ Turnpike.

Under PIP coverage, an injured person can seek payment for medical bills, lost wages, and certain related costs, up to policy limits. In more serious cases involving fatal injuries or significant harm, families may have the option to step outside the no-fault system, depending on the type of policy selected.

Insurance companies review medical records, crash reports, and policy details before deciding how claims move forward.

Multi-vehicle collisions can complicate the process. When several drivers and insurers become involved, questions may arise about fault, coverage limits, and shared responsibility.

Insurance adjusters often examine vehicle damage, witness statements, and roadway conditions. Keeping copies of medical bills, repair estimates, and communication with insurers can help keep the process organized.

In serious crash cases, a car accident attorney can explain how New Jersey laws apply and what types of compensation may be available. Legal guidance can help clarify how insurance policies interact with potential claims against other drivers involved in the accident.
