Warren Twp, NJ (November 7, 2024) – A fatal pedestrian crash occurred on Wednesday, November 6, when two men were tragically hit by a car while changing a tire on their van on the shoulder of Interstate 78 in Warren Township. The incident, reported by the New Jersey State Police, took place at approximately 5:30 p.m. near milepost 38.7 on the westbound lanes of I-78.
According to the New Jersey State Police, the two victims had stopped their Toyota minivan on the right shoulder of the highway due to a flat tire. They were in the process of changing the tire when a Mercedes-Benz sedan veered off the main roadway and onto the shoulder. The driver of the Mercedes lost control and struck the rear of the Toyota minivan, collided with the guardrail, and then struck both pedestrians.
The force of the crash caused severe injuries to the two men, and despite immediate medical assistance from paramedics, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency medical teams arrived quickly and provided treatment, but the severity of the injuries was too great. The bodies of the victims were transported to a nearby hospital for further investigation.
The crash caused significant delays in traffic as emergency responders, including the Warren Township Fire Department, worked to secure the scene. Firefighters assisted in the extrication of the vehicles involved and ensured that the area was cleared safely for investigators. The New Jersey State Police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether any factors such as speed or impaired driving played a role. At this time, the police have not released additional details about the driver or any potential charges.
