East Orange, NJ – Update: Cherry Davis Identified as Victim of Prospect St Fire
East Orange, NJ (July 26, 2022) – Police have identified the victim of a fatal residential fire on Prospect Street in East Orange on Friday, July 22nd as 69-year-old Cherry Davis.
According to investigators, fire crews managed to save several of the building’s residents, but Davis was trapped inside her apartment on the third floor.
According to an investigation, the fire was most likely caused by a vehicle that caught fire when the flames were allowed to spread to the building.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and their family at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
Liability for Structure Fires in New Jersey
Along with establishing the cause of a residential fire, it is also vital to determine if the action or inaction of a third party contributed to either the fire itself or to the occupants’ ability to safely flee the structure.
Some of the factors a New Jersey fatal fire lawyer will investigate are:
- Did the property owner comply with building and fire codes?
- Was proper fire safety equipment present?
- Were vents and fireplaces adequately maintained?
- Were functioning exits and fire escapes available?
- Were fire doors in use?
- Were working smoke alarms tested and installed?
- Were properly-constructed firewalls in place?
People often fall victim to catastrophic accidents arising from the negligence of contractors, subcontractors, building managers, landlords, property owners, and product manufacturers. When this happens, the appropriate response may be to file a legal claim against the at-fault party.
If a fire or a victim’s inability to react safely to one was caused by the action or inaction of a third party, a victim with a fire-related injury likely has a valid claim against the negligent party.
