Hawthorne, NJ – Fatal Hit & Run Takes Life of Joe Bender on Wagaraw Rd near Passaic St

Hawthorne, NJ (June 30, 2023) – A hit-and-run driver took the life of an elderly man in Hawthorne. The incident occurred on Wednesday night, June 28, according to reports. 

Police say a pedestrian was struck near the intersection of Wagaraw Road and Passaic Street. They were identified as Joe Bender, age 83. He was rushed to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities are now searching for a gray 2004 Ford F-150 that fled the scene after the incident occurred. The intersection was blocked for some time while emergency responders worked in the area.
