Intersection Collisions in New Jersey

Old Bridge, NJ - Car Thief Kills One, Injures Three in Police Pursuit on Spring Valley Rd

The most common locations for traffic accidents are intersections. Intersection accidents comprise roughly 40% of all automobile crashes nationwide.

Between 2008 and 2012, over 1,000 people died in intersection accidents in New Jersey, with the majority taking place in Essex, Middlesex, and Ocean counties. They are the third most frequently-occurring type of motor vehicle crash statewide and can happen for many different reasons. The four leading causes of New Jersey intersection accidents are:

  • Failure to yield to bicyclists, pedestrians, or other cars
  • Failure to observe traffic lights/signs
  • Rolling stops
  • Speeding

Even if a busy intersection is outfitted with traffic lights, yield signs, and stop signs, accidents will still happen. Regardless of what lights or signs exist, there will always be someone who plows through the intersection with reckless abandon, showing absolutely no regard for the safety of others. This is particularly true for drivers who have been drinking.
